Is Twine Legit or a Scam?
Yes, Twine is a legitimate platform that was founded in 2013. It’s a real company used by businesses to outsource AI training and freelance work. While it’s not as popular as the big AI and freelance companies, it’s trusted by major companies like Amazon, Samsung, Synthesia and Google.
Many users on review forums report finding genuine projects and clients on the platform. However, there are some downsides to it. Some features are limited unless you upgrade to a paid plan and competition can be high (we will get to it in a bit).
Although the platform is legit and offers a real space for freelancers to make money, you have to be aware of scammers who post fake jobs there. Twine AI keeps tracking fake clients but you have to do your part as well and never fall for fake clients who want to take you outside the platform or ask you for money. There are two ways of making money on Twine. Freelancers and experts can either join AI Training projects or freelance work posted by clients. Think of it as Alignerr and Upwork have a baby.
For AI training projects, you will be asked to collect datasets for AI companies to help them improve their AI models. For example, you may be asked to photograph faces or specific common items like groceries or furniture. This will help visual AI models with object tracking and detection, human action and facial recognition and more. You may have to take videos or record yourself speaking in different languages or saying short sentences. It all depends on the type of project but most projects available there are improving voice and visual AI models. Some projects may aslo include data annotation and labeling, AI response evaluation, and prompt writing.
Applying to freelance projects is the most common way to make money on Twine. Just like Upwork, you can browse and apply to projects based on your skills while Twine handles things like project management, quality control, and payments. Most freelance projects available there are writing, design, web development, marketing, translation, or creative work (not just AI). If you are experienced in any of these areas then this a good place to make money remotely without full-time job commitment.
How to Get Started on Twine
To get started, you have to create an account with your email address or Google account. You’ll be asked to upload you resume and skills. Entering your preferred freelance roles is the most important part here as this is what Twine AI will use to recommend suitable projects for you.
Turning on notifications is so important if you want to receive daily freelance work posted on the platform without having to log in. Here you can also select the type of jobs you’d like to be notified about based on your job experience level. This sounds exactly like any job board you sign up to which it is.
Once you are in, spend some time creating your portfolio before applying to any job. Add all work experiences, skills, languages that you have. The more information and work samples you put out there the better.
Uploading projects especially if you are applying to creative roles is useful. Remember this is what the client will see so act accordingly. You can browse available projects, view description, requirements and payment.
Note that you may not find AI training projects once you sign up because you are new. Once you build your portfolio, the system will send you emails of any AI opportunity based on your profile. Twine isn’t exactly like Alignerr or DataAnnotation where you submit an application and find AI training projects only. As Twine AI is exclusively dedicated to AI work. It’s more like a freelance platform that happens to have clients who are building their AI models and want to outsource freelancers.
How Much Can You Make?
Most users on forums say earnings can range anywhere from nothing at all to a few hundred dollars per project, depending on whether you actually land a job. In fact, one of the most common experiences shared is struggling to get hired in the first place, especially on a free account. For those who do find work, smaller gigs might pay around $10 to $50, while higher-paying projects can go up to a few hundred dollars.
Is Twine Worth It?
If you are a freelancer who have some experience with freelance platforms then you can give it a try. But, the amount of money you will make depends entirely on your experience and skills. If you spend time working on projects consistently, you will see a good outcome. Applying early also improve your chances of maximizing your earnings.
However, if you are only joining the platform to apply for AI training jobs then it may not be the perfect place for you. The platform has AI training jobs but they aren’t common and it’s not fully dedicated to it. Also, if your expertise doesn’t match their demand then it may not work out for you.
