How It Works
ThredUp is like Vestiaire Collective, where you can resell clothes you no longer need, but with an aesthetic touch and open to any piece that’s in good condition, not only luxurious fashion brands. Resale process is easy as ThredUp handles the heavy lifting for sellers. You order a Clean Out Kit, fill it with clothes, shoes, handbags, or accessories you no longer need, ship it back for free for the ThredUp team to inspect for several weeks, and they decide which are suitable for resale.
Unlike other competitors, ThredUp handles the rest for you. Accepted items are kept in ThredUp’s consignment warehouse, where they photograph them professionally, edit mockups, state brand, size, and condition in the description to maintain the aesthetic and professional outlook of the marketplace, set prices using Smart Pricing tools, and list them for sale on the site. So you don’t have to worry about the listing process at all.
Once your items are listed for sale under a consignment period (usually 60–90 days, depending on the item category and brand tier), buyers can purchase your items. If they sell, you earn a payout. ThredUp handles shipping directly from their inventory, so you don’t deal with the headaches of shipping to buyers yourself.
Note that if an item doesn’t sell before the consignment window expires, ThredUp removes it from the site and either recycle, donate, or otherwise process it. ThredUp also keeps and recycles rejected items by default. So, think of the platform as a place where you can declutter and get rid of things you don’t need, while having the chance to earn extra cash from a piece or two. ThredUp Requirements
Before deciding whether to open a shop on ThredUp or not, you have to learn about their requirements because they’re slightly strict. To sell on the marketplace, you must reside in the United States or Canada. International sellers outside these countries cannot directly send Clean Out Kits to ThredUp. Alternatives like Poshmark or Vinted are better if you live in Europe. But if you live in these eligible countries, you still need to follow ThredUp’s strict guidelines and quality standards when reselling your items with them. Your items must be clean and in good resale condition. Make sure they have no stains, broken zippers or missing buttons. Having large defects or looking excessively worn out may get your piece rejected. Both premium and mall brands are accepted, but designer items tend to earn higher payouts.
How Much Does It Cost to Sell Clothes on ThredUp?
ThredUp takes a commission cut after each sale, but instead of a flat fee, it uses a sliding percentage based on the resale value of your item. Lower-priced pieces under $20 earn only a small payout share, sometimes less than 10–15%, while mid-range items between $20 and $100 typically return 40–60%. High-value and designer items can earn up to 80–95% of the resale price, making them the most profitable. In addition to this commission, ThredUp charges a $14.99 processing fee for each Clean Out Kit, and sellers can optionally pay for Return Assurance. Once an item sells, ThredUp waits about 15 days to account for possible returns before releasing your payout, which can be collected via your preferred payment method.
